This is the first book that I've read that accurately represents my experience of the Beatle in my hometown and their influence on so many of us. Lyons covers most of the news stories of the day that related to the Beatles, many of which you may already know, but it is the way that he pulls the narrative together to show the cultural influence on Chicago that interested me the most. As a native southsider, the venues of the Ampitheater and Comiskey Park were very familiar to me. Lyons balances press reports with individual accounts in an easy-to-read style. I had already been to many Sox games at Comiskey Park before finally seeing the Beatles there in 1965. I enjoyed the way Lyons brought the reader into the experience in a chronological sequence by telling about the Ampitheater shows, which I missed, and the logistic challenges of getting the Beatles to and from the venues.. The book later progresses to telling about the influence the Beatles had on me and hundreds of other kids with regard to starting bands. I got my first electric guitar (Kingston) shortly after seeing the Beatles and formed my first band with others who had just gotten guitars. Lyons focuses mainly on the Northwest suburban bands, which to me were from parts of another planet that I wouldn't visit until several years later. However, as the years passed by I found myself playing with musicians from those suburbs who had the same core influences. For a lot of us the influence started with the Beatles, but we learned to play other top 40 songs too, later progressing to longer LP selections.This book is very well written and entertaining. Lyons really did his homework. I highly recommend it.
There’s been plenty written on The Beatles, their careers, and their lasting impact but I’ve never seen a book as specific as this one, studying the effect they had on a particular city - in this case, Chicago. It was interesting to see how they were received in this city vs the large cities on the East or West coast. A lot of it - like the Beatlemania craze - could be generalized but the lukewarm reception they received from city officials was unique to Chicago.Looking through the lens of living in 2020 and knowing how outrageous and edgy a lot of musicians are today, it’s funny to think that people frowned upon The Beatles because they had shaggy hair and wore tight-fitting suits. Times sure have changed and yet, at the same time, a lot of the social issues that were covered in the book are still prevalent in today’s society.It was interesting to revisit the path of The Beatles’ career. When you really look at it, they weren’t together for very long at all, they only toured for a few years and broke up a few years after that. Yet, the impact they had, and continue to have, on music ever since is like nothing this world’s ever seen before (or will likely ever see again). By the time I came to be a Beatles fan as a kid they were already firmly cemented as music legends but while reading this, I wonder what I would have thought had I been a teenager in the 60s when they first came to America. I bet I would have been swept up in Beatlemania but would I have stuck with them through their later years? It’s hard to say but all in all, this was an interesting read and gave me a lot to think about!
